Hello Friends!

On August 28, 2024, RECESS EDUCATION  will be joining #Give828, a national

day of giving focused specifically on supporting Black-led and Black-benefitting

organizations.

#Give828 isn't like other fundraising campaigns.

Give 8/28 takes place during Black Philanthropy Month and commemorates

multiple critical historical landmarks in Black Americans march toward freedom.

Here are just a few:

● August 28, 1945: Major League Baseball President Branch Rickey met with

Jackie Robinson to tell him he would be integrating the Majors.

● August 28, 2005: Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana. The storm,

which devastated New Orleans, inordinately impacted many of the city’s Black

residents.

● August 28, 2020: Our beloved Chadwick Boseman, aka T’Challa died.

● And...on August 28, 2024: YOU joined #Give828 in support of Black

self-empowerment through philanthropy!

Learn about all of the historical August 28 moments here.

In 2024, we're at a critical juncture. The disproportionate impacts of economic

disparities and social injustice on Black communities underscore the vital need for

resources to support Black-led nonprofits.

RECESS Education  is on the ground every day, ensuring our communities

are equipped with access to opportunities that will end disparities and improve the educational and social outcomes of marginalized communities.

This is why we need your support to continue the work.

Support RECESS Education this #Give28, and help us provide resources at our new location that will allow us to serve children and families in our community.

THE BRADENTON VILLAGE READING ROOM

Address:  1302 3rd St West

Bradenton, Fl 34205

Our Current Services at the Reading Room

  1.  We have provided this space with internet access that will enable families to come in to apply for community services or support with other agencies.  We have laptops and ipads available  for use if necessary.
  2. We are currently serving teens who need educational support.
  • KM is 17 years old and will turn 18 in December.  KM currently resides in a group home.  The group home reached out to Dr. Jefferson, RECESS President over the summer to request assistance with KM obtaining her high school diploma.  KM receives curriculum and tutoring support from RECSS and is on track to receive her high school diploma within a year.  This will enable KM to access necessary career opportunities that she needs to transition from the custody of the Department of Children and Families.
  • BC is 14 years old and was a student at an area alternative program.  BC's parents' reached out to request assistance as they believed the educational setting was causing stress and trauma to BC and would cause her to fall behind academically.  BC's parents chose to homeschool BC temporarily with hopes of BC returning to her high school next year.  RECESS enrolled BC in the same courses of her previous school with the same online platform, Imagine Edgenuity.  BC is a sophomore and currently enrolled in the following core courses:

English 2A

Algebra 2 Honors

Biology 86.7%

AP World History: Modern A

(Electives to be added)

  • KH is 13 years old and was recently assigned to an alternative school where the mother reports she was being bullied.  The mother decided to home school KH to focus on emotional and behavioral care needs.   KH is new to our services.  We are currently assessing her academic needs.

MORE TEENS ARE IN NEED OF OUR SUPPORT.  PLEASE HELP US END THE SCHOOL TO PRISON PIPELINE AND CREATE A PIPELINE TO SUCCESS!

Our Future Plans for the Reading Room
