Give 8/28 began in 2018 with a vision from YBGB Institute founder, Ebonie Johnson Cooper, to have a giving day dedicated to grassroots, Black nonprofits.

As with many ideas started on a shoestring budget, year one of Give 8/28 yielded results comparable to its guerilla approach. Yet, there was energy from the 114 participants and hope etched into the $12,700 the organizations collectively raised. In year two, Give 8/28 partnered with the crowdfunding platform, Mightycause to provide an invaluable infrastructure to the day. The new systems in place resulted in more than 170 nonprofits raising more than $34,000. In 2020 and 2021, Give 8/28 raised more than $328,000 for more than 720 Black-led and Black-benefiting organizations from 3,916 donors. In 2022, 272 organizations raised $252,629 from 1,702 individual donors. Last year, 350 organizations raised over $220,000!

Give 8/28 builds on the momentum created by Black Philanthropy Month with one concentrated day of giving for Black nonprofits, which leverages online fundraising tools in order to tap into the enthusiasm of the 21st Century philanthropist.
