What's significant about 8/28?
Four pivotal moments in Black history happened on August 28 — two tragic, two triumphant.
- Emmet Till was brutally murdered on August 28, 1955.
- Martin Luther King delivered his "I Have a Dream" speech on August 28, 1963.
- Hurricane Katrina made landfall in Louisiana on August 28, 2005, devastating New Orleans and many of its Black residents.
- Barack Obama became the first Black man ever to win the nomination for the U.S. presidency on August 28, 2008.
Your support on this Blackest Day of Giving will help Southeast Youth & Family Services provide essential early learning and mental health support to community members in need. COVID-19 has exacerbated struggles that many people in our community were already experiencing before the pandemic — inequities in housing, employment, health care, and education.
We are stepping up and continuing to offer all of our services virtually. We're making sure they have the technology to stay connected by donating tablets, and helping them pay internet and cell phone bills. We're teaming up with organizations like FAST (Fathers and Sons Together) to distribute food and household supplies.
Thank you for giving what you can so we can do more help for more families through these tough times.
